Description

The former immigrant station and railway platform, now a social club, was built in 1871 by Thomas Prosser for the North Eastern Railway Company and was extended in 1881. It has undergone alterations in the late 20th century.

The building is constructed of yellow brick with ashlar dressings and features hipped slate roofs. It has an L-shaped plan and is a single-storey structure with thirteen windows, all of which are top hung casements. There is an off-centre late 20th-century door flanked by windows, two of which are blocked. At the rear, there is a railway platform with a renewed hipped canopy supported by cast-iron columns. To the south and east, there are ashlar screen walls with segment-arched openings.

Historically, this building is significant as it was exclusively used to handle immigrant passengers from north-west Europe to America. These passengers traveled by sea to Hull and then by train to Liverpool, where they embarked for America. For health reasons, they were segregated from other passengers, making this station part of the heritage of many Americans. The immigrant station or waiting room provided facilities for emigrants to meet ticket agents, wash, use the toilet, and take shelter from the weather. It is estimated that 2.2 million migrants, primarily from Scandinavia and the Baltic, passed through Hull between 1836 and 1914.
