Description
The First World War Memorial, designed by sculptor T. Harold Hughes, was completed in 1924 and is located in Paragon Square, Kingston upon Hull. It is made of granite and Portland stone, featuring bronze railings. The memorial has a stepped base that supports a pylon-shaped monument with a moulded plinth and a plain cornice. The front face includes an attached credence, above which is an inscription and a coat of arms encircled by a wreath. In front of the pylon stands a separate tapered pedestal. On either side of the memorial, there are sloping coped walls that return at the ends to create square enclosures, which culminate in pedestals topped with urns. Low bronze railings with posts shaped like lions' heads enclose a garden area in front of the memorial.
