Description

Ten houses, now shops and stores, were built around 1790, with alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed of brick, colourwashed, and have ashlar dressings, slate roofs, and nine brick ridge stacks. They stand three storeys high and feature a 22-window range. The windows are mostly plain sashes with splayed lintels. Number 43 has a canted first-floor oriel window with a panelled parapet and a central open pediment supported by brackets, containing a plain sash window flanked by wooden cross casements. Number 44 has two-light wooden-framed casements with transoms, while Number 51 has 20th-century single-light windows. Above, the smaller windows are mainly plain sashes with splayed lintels. Number 43 has three segment-headed sashes; Numbers 44 and 45 have six-pane sashes; and Numbers 50 and 51 have late 20th-century casements. The ground floor now largely consists of late 20th-century shop fronts with fascias. Number 43 has a recessed central glazed door flanked by splayed showcases. These buildings represent a significant survival of the city’s planned redevelopment in the late 18th century, demonstrating their original design and scale. This contributes to group value.
