Description
The 100 ton steam crane at Alexandra Dock in Kingston upon Hull was built in 1886 and has been disused since around 1980. It was designed by James Taylor & Co., Engineers, of Birkenhead. The crane features a square ashlar base with stone steps on the east side, complemented by a wrought-iron handrail and balustrade. A triangular steel cabin is mounted on roller track and includes two doorways with wooden sliding doors and a glazed front cab. The jib consists of double tubular booms with strutted stays, connected to the triangular main frame. At the rear, there is a square boiler enclosure with a rounded end, a segmental roof, and a tubular flue. Inside, the crane has a cast-iron structure that houses a horizontal twin cylinder hoist engine and a similar vertical luffing engine with a worm drive, along with a vertical boiler at the rear. This crane was built to serve ships using the Alexandra Dock.
