Description
The Airship Memorial at Hull Western Cemetery is a memorial built in 1924, made of Portland stone and bronze. It features a free-standing stone chest topped with a stone cross. The low stone chest has projections at either end, which hold bronze plaques. One plaque lists the names of 28 British servicemen, while the other lists 16 American servicemen who died in the disaster on August 24, 1921. The airship, R38/ZR.2, was constructed at Howden and tragically exploded, falling into the River Humber during its final trial flight.
