Description

The building comprises a primary school and an adjoining nursery school, dating from 1885 and 1898, designed by W Botterill. Later alterations occurred in the late 20th century. Constructed in brick with ashlar and terracotta dressings, the roofs are gabled and hipped, clad in slate. The style is Flemish Renaissance Revival.

The primary school, located to the right, features a central block flanked by single-storey wings and hipped end pavilions. A central shouldered gable above the front windows incorporates three windows separated by pilasters, the outer pair rising through a cornice and topped with ball finials. Terracotta relief panels are positioned above the windows, with a larger dated panel beneath a pediment. An octagonal wooden bell turret, capped with an ogee lead dome and finial, rises from the roof. The wings feature a central double door with an overlight containing glazing bars, flanked by pilasters. A small double sash window is located on either side; the left wing door is blocked. The end pavilions each have two large through-eaves dormers with pilasters, a cornice, and a shouldered gable beneath a pediment, containing two casement windows. Each pavilion roof is topped with a square wooden bell turret with a square ogee dome and finial.

The adjoining nursery school, situated to the left, has a main block set at a right angle to the street, accompanied by two gabled rear wings. A shouldered gable topped with a pediment is prominent on the right side. This section features three windows with hoodmoulds and shaped keystones, flanked by pilasters, and incorporates a datestone in the gable. The right return displays three gabled through-eaves dormers with single windows, with the rightmost one currently blocked, alongside three smaller windows. A front-facing wing features a central round-arched through-eaves dormer, containing a relief panel within the tympanum and a small pediment above. A single small window is located on either side of this dormer. A tapered octagonal wooden bell turret, capped with a lead dome and finial, crowns the nursery school.
