Description
This is an office building dating from 1900, designed by Gelder & Kitchen of Hull. It is constructed of brick with a granite plinth and ashlar dressings, topped by a coped parapet. The building is four storeys high and has eight bays, six forming the main symmetrical, convex front, with slightly projecting end bays. The end bays are flanked by enriched panelled pilasters, topped by brick pedestals with chequerwork. Each end bay features a central, two-storey recessed area with a canted ashlar bay window. A cross casement window is positioned on the first floor level; above it, a taller window with a keystone, open pediment and apron; and above that again, a two-light mullioned window. The ground floor windows are large, segment-headed, single-pane windows with keystones, transoms and toplights, featuring wooden mullions. The central four bays mirror this fenestration, incorporating wooden bay windows, with wide pilaster strips between the windows, adorned with first-floor bands and chequerwork panels at their heads. A double entrance bay is situated to the right, in a simpler style. To the left of the main entrance, a three-light cross casement sits above a three-light mullioned window, and above that a smaller, similar window. Above the cart entrance to the right, similar fenestration is found, utilising two-light windows. The main doorway features a wide segmental pediment with volutes, corniced granite pilasters flanking a round-arched double door and fanlight, with a relief panel inscribed "Maritime Chambers" positioned above the door. To the right of the doorway is a square cart entrance with iron gates, guard stones, and a vestigial cornice. Group value is derived from its contribution to the architectural character of the area.
