Description
The statue and tomb located 15 metres north of St. James Church was created in 1910 by the sculptor Gilbert Bayes. It features a rectangular grave tomb made of white marble, topped with a lead figure. The tomb has square corner piers and low ramped walls that step down to the west, where there is a square pier adorned with Doric columns. The east front of the tomb is inscribed with the words: "TO THE LOVING MEMORY OF MY HUSBAND CHARLES HENRY, FIRST BARON OF NUNBURNHOLME. BORN 1833. DIED 1907. THIS MEMORIAL IS ERECTED BY HIS WIFE." Above this inscription is a life-size allegorical figure holding a wreath, with a scroll at the base that features a Latin motto and is signed by Gilbert Bayes, dated 1909. This memorial is considered an exceptional example of the work of this significant Romantic sculptor.
