Description

Magdalen House is a house dating from around 1820, with alterations made around 1870. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings and has a pantile roof, featuring three brick gable stacks with ashlar coped gables and kneelers. The two-storey, three-window front is symmetrical. A central doorway has a six-panel door and an overlight with margin lights. A porch is supported by slender Doric columns and features an elaborate cornice with coupled brackets. Flanking the doorway are single tripartite square bay windows with plain sashes and Doric pilasters, topped with an elaborate cornice and paired brackets. The upper floor has a single plain sash between two wider sashes. Inside, a rounded wooden staircase has two slender turned balusters per tread and a moulded mahogany handrail. The hallway includes a deeply moulded plaster cornice, moulded doorcases with six-panel doors, and a segmental arch with panel pilasters.
