Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II listed building constructed between 1846 and 1848 by architect J L Pearson. It is built from ashlar stone and features a Westmorland slate roof. The church has a four-bay nave with a west bellcote and a gabled south porch, as well as a single-bay chancel that includes a vestry to the north. Designed in the Decorated style, it has a chamfered plinth and a continuous chamfered sill string course.
At the west end, there is a central stepped buttress flanked by traceried lancet windows set on a continuous angled string course, with diagonal buttresses at the corners. The bellcote is diamond set and square, featuring two-light pointed openings on round shafts topped with a pyramidal stone roof. The nave includes a pointed doorway supported by octagonal responds, with angle buttresses leading to the porch. The pointed two-light windows have quatrefoil and mouchette tracery, also flanked by stepped buttresses.
The chancel features a pointed priest's door with paired traceried lancets to the right on the south side. The vestry has paired lancets on the east side, and there are paired traceried lancets in the east bay of the north wall of the chancel. The east elevation showcases a pointed three-light window with reticulated tracery. All openings are below hoodmoulds, and the gables are adorned with stone copings on gableted kneelers, with ridge crosses on the east gables. The church was derelict at the time of the resurvey, and the interior was not inspected.
