Description
The Church of Saint Michael is a Grade II* listed building with origins dating back to the 12th century. The early 13th century saw the construction of the nave, while the chancel was added in the 14th century. The west tower, built in 1827 on earlier foundations, and the south porch are 19th-century additions. The church is constructed from coursed squared rubble, with some brick patching and brick used for the early 19th-century additions, all topped with graduated slate roofs.
The west tower is two stages high, featuring a three-bay nave with a north aisle and a south porch, along with a two-bay chancel. The tower has a stone base with battered brick sides leading up to the belfry stage, which includes a band and round-headed belfry openings, topped with a low parapet and corner pinnacles. The nave has two square-headed windows with two lights and Perpendicular tracery on the west side, and one three-light square-headed window with Decorated tracery on the east side. The south door leading into the nave is pointed and features a keystone, while the south porch has a pointed brick arch and a tumbled gable.
On the north side of the nave, there is a two-light square-headed window with Perpendicular tracery to the west and a three-light square-headed window with Perpendicular tracery to the east. The chancel includes two trefoil-headed lancets flanking an ogee-headed priests' door, as well as a three-light pointed east window with cusped intersecting tracery beneath a hoodmould with face stops. Additionally, there is a low side lancet at the west end of the north wall.
Inside, the church is plain, rendered, and colour-washed. The north arcade has been removed. The south wall of the nave features two niches, one being a small lancet and the other a larger four-centred opening. The east wall of the north aisle has two more niches with four-centred arches. In the chancel, there is a trefoil-headed niche at the west end of the south wall and an ogee-headed piscina at the east end.
