Description
The Tower on Castle Hill is a structure dating from around 1815, built for William Thompson, a banker from Hull. It is designed in the Gothick style and features a white brick exterior with a red brick interior and stone dressings. The tower has two storeys and an octagonal plan. It includes a plinth and a blocked square-headed door with a hoodmould above an uninscribed shield. There are slit windows on seven sides, and a moulded band at the first floor level. The first floor has eight oblong windows, all under a continuous hoodmould. At the eaves level, there is a crenellated parapet. This tower was constructed as a visual focal point for Cottingham Castle, which has since been demolished. Cottingham Castle was a Gothick house built for Thompson in the early 19th century.
