Description

St Mary's House is a house that was formerly Etton Rectory, with origins dating back to the 16th century or earlier. It was altered and enlarged in the late 18th century and again around 1854 by Ewan Christian. The building is constructed of red brick with pantiled roofs and has an irregular L-shaped plan.

The earlier range of the house is two storeys high with two bays and features irregular fenestration. On the ground floor, there is a 19th-century canted bay window with a four-pane sash to the left, a four-pane sash in a shallow projection to the right, and a 12-pane sash in the centre. The first floor has three four-pane sashes of varying sizes, all set under gauged brick arches, which are cambered to the left. A pair of large external stacks, raised in the mid-19th century and featuring offsets, dominate the elevation. These stacks contain much late medieval brick, and a significant area of this brickwork is also visible in the wall immediately south of the southern stack. The roof has a hipped section to the right and a coped gable to the left, with an end stack on the left.

The late 18th-century cross wing is two storeys tall with four bays. The ground floor has a late 19th-century square bay window to the left and scattered 20th-century windows to the right. The first floor features three four-pane sashes along with a small window with glazing bars in the third bay. There is an axial stack and plain close verges.

Inside the house, no features from before the 19th century are currently visible, although it is likely that earlier elements remain hidden beneath later alterations.
