Description
ETTON MAIN STREET SE 94 SE (north side, off) 4/39 St Mary's House II House, formerly Etton Rectory. C16 or earlier origins, altered and enlarged in late C18 and again c1854 by Ewan Christian. Red brick, pantiled roofs. Irregular L-shaped plan. Earlier range of 2 storeys, 2 bays. Irregular fenestration: ground floor: C19 canted bay with 4-pane sash to left, 4-pane sash in shallow projection to right, 12-pane sash to centre. First floor: three 4-pane sashes of differing sizes, all under gauged brick arches (cambered to left). The elevation is dominated by a pair of massive external stacks, with offsets, raised in the mid C19. These contained much late medieval brick, a large area of which also survives in the wall immediately to the south of the southern stack. Hipped roof to right, coped gable to left, end stack to left. Late C18 cross wing: 2 storeys, 4 bays. Ground floor: late C19 square bay to left, scattered C20 fenestration to right. First floor: three 4-pane sashes with small window with glazing bars to bay 3. Axial stack, plain close verges. Interior: no features earlier than the C19 are now visible although it is likely that they remain hidden beneath subsequent alterations.
