Description
The tomb with a lead statue, located 6 metres north of St. James Church, was created in 1909 by the sculptor Gilbert Bayes. It features white marble and a lead figure, designed as a rectangular grave tomb with square piers at each corner and small defining walls. At the west end, there is a tall square pier topped with an egg and dart moulded cornice. A plaque on the tomb is inscribed with "THE HON. GERALD VABERAIN WILSON THIRD SON OF FIRST BARON NUNBURNHOLME. BORN 1886. DIED 1908. THIS MEMORIAL ERECTED BY HIS MOTHER." Above the inscription is a near life-size lead figure of an angel holding a plaque with the name "JOHN" in raised letters, also signed by Gilbert Bayes in 1909. This tomb is an exceptional example of the work of this significant Romantic sculptor.
