Description
This is a building of shops and offices dating from the first half of the 18th century, located on the west side of North Bar Within in Beverley. It is constructed of painted brick with a steep roof covered in Welsh slates, featuring five dormers, two of which retain original moulded pediments. A Sun Insurance sign is present.
The building has eleven sash windows on the first floor; these have glazing bars to all except the window at number 47. The ground floor is occupied by shops, and their fronts incorporate earlier reeded pilasters. Shop front details vary: number 41 has a late 19th-century front, number 43 has grooved pilasters and a fascia, number 45 has grooved pilasters, an entablature and a dentil cornice, and number 47 has a modern shop front. A recessed doorway in the centre has a gauged flat arch with a stone keystone, and contains a six-panel door.
The building was formerly the Tiger Inn. The interior retains some original features, including reception doors with Composite or Corinthian mouldings. Number 47 has a mid-18th century wooden staircase with carved tread ends, turned balusters, and gadrooned knops.
