Description
No. 35 North Bar Within is a building dating from around 1740, designed by William Wrightson. It has two storeys and attics, constructed of red brick, and features a steep slated roof with three pedimented dormers. The building has an ogee bracketed eaves cornice and five sash windows on the first floor, which include glazing bars. On the ground floor, there are two windows and a shop front with a wooden case, carved pilasters adorned with paterae, a dentil cornice, and an entablature. A band runs along the first floor. The entrance features a six-panel door with a traceried fanlight and a wooden doorcase supported by consoles. Inside, the entrance hall is stone-flagged with white limestone dots. The staircase is pseudo-cantilevered with an open string, a moulded handrail that ramps up to fluted columnar newels, and alternately twisted balusters, along with fielded panelling on the dado. There is also a late 18th century or early 19th century chimneypiece in situ, though its provenance is unknown.
