Description

Fond Brig is a Gothick folly bridge built around 1770 for Sir George Strickland of Boynton Hall. The bridge is primarily made of brick, with limestone blocks and architectural fragments incorporated into its design. It spans the east-west Woldgate public road, crossing over a north-south former carriage drive.

On the north elevation, the bridge features an elliptical arch made from a single arch ring, primarily constructed of brick stretchers, with some paired headers. The bricks are not gauged, and the plain spandrels rise continuously into a parapet that extends over 2 meters above the bridge deck. This parapet includes a broad window with a two-centred arch and a stone sill, and it is topped with a varied assortment of stone blocks, including a piece of medieval window tracery set centrally and at right angles to the wall face. The bridge is flanked by angled wing walls that step up to the top of the parapet, which are also capped with stone blocks. The lower sections of these wing walls contain niches; the east side features a pointed arch with a section of medieval hood moulding, while the west side has a larger round-arched alcove.

On the south elevation, the bridge's arch is accompanied by a pair of small niches with flat arches in the spandrel wall. Similar to the north side, the abutment walls project as angled wings, each containing additional niches: the west side has a circular oculus, and the east side features a larger round-arched alcove. The parapet on the south elevation is lower and more typical in height relative to the bridge deck, also capped with irregular stone blocks.
