Description

The Monks Walk Public House, formerly known as the George and Dragon Inn, is an early 18th-century building with earlier elements. It is located on the east side of Beverley Highgate. The exterior is red brick with a pantile roof and a bold cyma recta eaves cornice constructed of plaster, featuring an iron gutter. A Sun Insurance sign is visible. The building has five windows, each with gauged brick heads and painted stone sills; the sash windows are now without glazing bars. A segmental-headed doorway with a six-panel door provides access to a central passage. The building has a rendered plinth.

Inside, remains of half-timbered construction exist, notably a whitewashed brick wall in the central passage, divided into bays by Doric pilasters and incorporating blind openings. The wall features moulded and dentil triangular, segmental, and broken segmental pediments, and bears a date of 1671. The architectural style is considered to be Artisan Mannerist. The building is understood to be the remains of the residence of the Warton family.
