Description
The Old House is a house dating from the late 17th century, with an inscribed lintel reading "B" over "W M/1697", suggesting it was built by William and Mary Bird. The house is constructed of stone with a slate roof. It is two storeys high with an attic, and has three bays. The gables are coped with kneelers. The ground floor has single-chamfered-mullioned windows of three and five lights, each with a label mould. The first floor windows are arranged as three-light windows with two single lights on one side, and two single lights on the other. There are two gabled dormers, each with two lights. The entrance is particularly notable with a large inscribed lintel and label mould. The side and rear elevations are similar in design. The rear elevation incorporates brickwork, although a section on the right side is constructed of stone. The interior was described by E. Mercer in English Vernacular Houses at page 142, but has not been inspected as part of this listing.
