Description

Numbers 287, 289, and 291 are a pair of integrated shops with a café above, featuring an attached verandah. They were likely built between 1890 and 1900 and have been altered since. The building is designed in a Neo-Tudor style, with white painted render and applied half-timbering, topped by a red tiled roof. It has a rectangular plan that runs at right angles to the street.

The exterior consists of two storeys with two gabled bays. The ground floor has 20th-century shopfronts, while the first floor features large shallow oriel windows, both with wooden mullions and transoms—three lights on the left and five on the right—set beneath red tiled pentice roofs. The gables are adorned with ornamental half-timbering, painted bargeboards, and small finials.

The attached verandah has three wide bays supported by cast-iron columns with Ionic capitals and shallow brackets that include roses in the spandrels. It also features a panelled iron frieze and a curved glazed roof.

This building forms part of a group with Numbers 273-277 and 281 to the left and Numbers 293-307 to the right, and the verandah contributes to the distinctive character of this street.
