Description
Crosby House, part of Nazareth House, is a villa dating from the early to mid 19th century that has been altered. It features white-painted render with sandstone dressings painted black and a hipped slate roof. The building has a shallow U-plan, consisting of a double-depth three-bay main range with short gabled crosswings and a back extension.
The exterior is two storeys high with a symmetrical arrangement of windows, including a central bay that slightly projects forward. It has plain pilaster strips, a first-floor sill band, a moulded eaves cornice with a blocking course, and shallow open-pedimental gables on the wings. The central bay includes a Tuscan porch accessed by four steps, which shelters a square-headed doorway with a moulded architrave, panelled double doors, and a plain overlight. Above, there is a window with a panelled architrave, a fluted frieze, a dentilled cornice, and a segmental pediment on consoles. The flanking bays have windows with corniced architraves, all of which are recent replacements. The wings feature canted bay windows at the ground floor with prominent cornices, and first-floor windows with moulded architraves and dentilled cornices, all now fitted with uPVC six-pane glazing with casement openings. The main range has two ridge chimneys, while each wing has one.
At the left end, there is a single-storey pavilion with a round-headed blank arch. The rear of the building has a large round-headed stair window with etched and stained glass. Inside, the entrance hall includes a modillioned cornice and a dog-legged staircase with cast-iron balusters.
