Description

Numbers 469, 471, and 473 are a pair of shops with an attached verandah, likely built between 1880 and 1890, and have been altered over time. The building is constructed of brick, featuring applied half-timbering and some red tile-hanging, with a slate roof. The verandah is made of cast iron and glass.

The structure has a rectangular two-unit plan positioned at right angles to the street and stands three storeys high with attics, featuring two gabled bays. The ground floor has 20th-century shop fronts, while the first and second floors each have rectangular two-storeyed bay windows with wooden mullions and transomed casements. These windows are adorned with dentilled cornices and tile-hung aprons, flanked by strips of timber and plaster panelling. The attic gables display decorative applied half-timbering and oversailing verges with mutuels. The right gable features a mullion and transom window, while the left gable has a similar window that is now missing its mullions below the transom. All windows have small leaded panes in the top lights.

The attached verandah consists of two wide bays supported by cast-iron columns that also function as downspouts. These columns have reeded pedestals, plain shafts, square crocket caps, and enriched stilts, from which elegantly extended foliated brackets support beams with a frieze of raised stars and moulded gutters with cresting. The verandah has a single-pitched glazed roof.

The building forms part of a group with the adjoining verandah attached to numbers 459-467 on the left and numbers 479 and 481 on the right, contributing to the character of this street.
