Description
The Church of St Mary is a Grade II listed building that originally served as the parish church of Liverpool. The west tower was constructed between 1828 and 1832 by John Broadbent. The north side was added in 1840 and does not have an aisle. A large south aisle or chapel was built in 1911, and much of the rest of the church underwent post-war restoration.
The tower features angle buttresses that end in pinnacles, a three-light west window with an ogival hood mould and fleuron, and the first stage has three-light windows with blind arcading above which is a four-faced clock. The design includes Perpendicular tracery throughout. The bell stage has three-light louvred bell openings with ogival hoods, and the tower is topped with an embattled parapet that has pierced tracery.
The nave has north and south porches at the west end. The south aisle has a west entrance and extends eastward as a chapel, consisting of five bays in total. The chancel has four bays and features a five-light east window. At the east end, there is a low vestry and store rooms.
Inside, the church was reconstructed after sustaining war damage and contains a heavily restored Romanesque font located under the tower, as well as a Saxon cross situated at the east end in the vestry.
