Description
The Montini Youth Centre, originally known as St Oswald's Schools with Convent of Mercy, is a school and youth centre built around 1855, possibly designed by Augustus Welby Northmore Pugin. The building is constructed of stone and features a slate roof. It has two storeys and consists of seven bays, oriented east-west with the gable end facing the street. The eastern bay includes cross gables on both the north and south sides.
The ground floor has cross windows, most of which have been blocked since 1984. There is weathering above the ground floor and first floor windows, which contain two ogee-headed lights set between flat buttresses. The street-facing gable features a three-light pointed window with Decorated tracery. The cross gables have windows with three ogee-headed lights, and the northern gable includes a statue set in a niche. The roof is adorned with three gabled vents on each side. A wall along the street connects the Montini Youth Centre to the Convent of Mercy.
