Description
The former Higsons Brewery and former Grapes Public House is a building constructed between 1896 and 1902, designed by architect J. Redford for Robert Cain and Sons. It is made of red brick and terracotta and features various ranges. The main facade facing the street has eleven bays, with a round-arched and gabled entrance on the east side. The first four bays are three storeys high, while the remaining bays are one storey. There is a sill band on the first floor, a bracketed cornice with consoles at intervals, and a tall parapet with coping. The windows above the sill band are set in round-headed recesses with decorated spandrels. The building displays extensive terracotta decoration, including motifs of beer casks, hops, barley, and inscriptions. The public house section has windows and two entrances on the ground floor, with terracotta panels between the floors. There is a two-bay return to Grafton Street, leading to a five-storey, seven-bay range. The tall rear range features a corner tower and chimney, while a courtyard range to the right is three storeys high and has four bays, along with a clock and the date 1887.
