Description
The Roman Catholic Church of Saint Mary, built between 1859 and 1860 by R. W. Hughes, is a Catholic church located on Church Road in Woolton. Constructed from rock-faced stone with ashlar dressings and a slate roof, the church is oriented with the ritual east to the northwest. It features an aisle-less nave, transepts, and a chancel flanked by side chapels, along with single-storey sacristies on either side and a gabled north porch. The ritual west end is supported by diagonal buttresses and includes an entrance along with pointed windows arranged in a 2:3:2-light configuration, showcasing Geometric tracery. The nave has five bays with 2-light windows and lacks a clerestory. The north transept contains two 2-light windows with a rose window above, while the south transept features a 4-light window. The chancel is accented by diagonal buttresses that flank a 5-light window. The gabled side chapels also have 2-light windows. The south sacristy includes windows with one and two cusped lights and a gable topped with a rose window. Inside, the reredos is likely by Edward Welby Pugin, and the east window, dated 1878, was created by Capronnier.
