Description
The Church of St Peter, built between 1886 and 1887, is a notable example of a late 19th-century church designed by Grayson and Ould. Constructed from red sandstone, it features a nave with gabled aisles, a south porch, a chancel, a north chapel, and a south-east tower. The four-bay aisles are adorned with three-light windows that exhibit perpendicular tracery, while the high five-light west window projects outward with windows on the returns. The north transept includes a four-light window and diagonal buttresses, and the three-bay north chapel has a four-light east window. The chancel boasts a seven-light window and a vestry to the south. The tower is characterized by angle buttresses, a canted turret at the south-east angle, paired two-light bell openings with transoms, a cornice featuring gargoyles, and an embattled parapet with pinnacles.
Inside, the church features five-bay arcades supported by quatrefoil columns and an arch-braced collar roof. The octagonal alabaster font is decorated with relief scenes on its sides, and the pulpit is crafted in a similar style. Wrought iron screens separate the chancel and chapel, along with a parclose screen. An organ is housed in a finely detailed case in the arch to the south of the chancel. The sedilia features cusped arches and pinnacles. The church contains good 19th-century stained glass, primarily by Kempe, with two windows by Morris and Co. in the south aisle and baptistry being early works. This church exemplifies a complete late 19th-century ecclesiastical design.
