Description

The Produce Exchange Buildings is an office building originally designed as a goods warehouse for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway, constructed in 1902, possibly by T. Shelmerdine. The building is made of stone with a granite ground floor and stands five storeys tall with attics, featuring seven bays. The ground floor has raised bands and segmental-headed openings adorned with triple keystones. The first bay includes an entrance framed by a Gibbs surround, topped with a bulls eye window and a segmental open pediment. The fifth bay features a round-arched entrance with a round hood.

On the first floor, the windows are arranged in a pattern of 1:3:3:3:1:2:1, with mullions and transoms, and a string course above. The second and third floors are distinguished by an attached Ionic colonnade with an entablature. The second floor also showcases three tripartite bowed windows, supported by colonnettes and topped with an entablature. The building has a mansard roof with pedimented dormers arranged in a 1:3:1-light pattern, situated between a round turret with a colonnade and cupola on the left, and a gable with a round-headed window on the right, which is surmounted by an aedicule featuring niches and rusticated pilasters, along with a segmental open pediment. The building also has tall moulded cross-axial stacks, while the rear facade is more utilitarian.
