Description

The ruins of a building located approximately 230 metres north-north-east of the Church of St Cuthbert are possibly the remains of a priest's house, which later became a folly. Dating from the 14th century, it has likely been altered in the late 18th century or early 19th century. The structure is made of squared sandstone, with a masonry wall that survives to a maximum height of about 5 metres. At the eastern end, there is a double-chamfered doorway featuring a depressed pointed arch. To the west, there is a gap, a free-standing square rubble pier, and another gap. The rest of the wall includes the splayed jamb of a window, the sill, moulded jambs, and part of the springing of the arch of a second window, along with a doorway similar to the one at the eastern end. South of the rubble pier, there is a second free-standing rubble pier. Some of the stonework displays evidence of late 18th century or early 19th century tooling, indicating some reconstruction during that period. The remains do not follow any clearly identifiable medieval plan.
