Description
The Old Farmhouse, located approximately 50 metres south-west of the current Cowpe Hall Farmhouse, dates back to 1752, as indicated by a datestone on the first floor to the right of the porch. The building is currently derelict and constructed from watershot coursed sandstone with a stone slate roof. It features one chimney on the ridge and another at the left gable. The farmhouse has a double-depth, two-bay plan with a centrally projecting porch.
It stands two storeys high and is symmetrical in design. The two-storey gabled porch, which has kneelers, contains a 2-light casement window with a flush mullion on the first floor and a plain doorway on the right side wall. There are two windows on each floor, all of which are coupled 4-pane boxed sashes with flush mullions, although most are damaged. A square datestone with scored decoration, inscribed with "H R J 1752" in scored lettering, is situated between the upper and lower windows on the right side.
The left return wall has a small lean-to, and behind it, there are two ground floor windows and a window along with a doorway on the first floor. The rear of the farmhouse, which is built back to the slope, features a damaged single-storey lean-to and a window on the first floor. This farmhouse is a good example of its period.
