Description

The Post Office and the adjoining house to the east, believed to have been built around 1910, is a shop and residence located in Downham Village. The building is constructed of rubble, primarily limestone, with sandstone dressings and features a slate roof. It stands two storeys high.

On the west wall, the left side projects forward as an outshut, which includes a large shop window with a plain stone surround and a relieving arch above it. The door, located in the right-hand return wall of the outshut, also has a plain stone surround and is sheltered by an open timber porch. To the right of the outshut is a sashed window with glazing bars and a plain stone surround. At a 45-degree angle across the corner of the building is a similar window, with a third window on the south gable wall. Above the middle window, corbels support the corner of the building.

The south wall features a tripartite sashed window with glazing bars, a plain stone surround, and square mullions on the first floor. Above this window is a blank niche with a plain stone surround and a semi-circular head. On the ground floor to the right, there is a door with a plain stone surround, external stone steps, and an open timber porch. The gable is topped with coping, a left-hand kneeler, and a ball finial at the apex.

To the east, there is an additional section of the building that projects forward, featuring tripartite sashed windows with glazing bars, plain stone surrounds, and square mullions on both floors. On the ground floor to the right is another sashed window with glazing bars and a plain stone surround. Further to the right is a single-storey outshut that includes a similar window and a door with a plain stone surround to its left.
