Description

Hesketh End is a house dating to 1591, with early 17th-century additions and a restoration in 1907. It is constructed of coursed sandstone rubble, with the front wall of the north range rebuilt in punched ashlar, the side and rear walls pebbledashed. The roof is covered in stone slate. The house comprises a north range with a cross-wing at the southern end, arranged over two storeys with an attic.

The front wall of the north range features two 3-light double-chamfered mullioned windows on each floor, along with a chamfered door surround, all dating from the 1907 restoration. Incorporated into this wall are inscribed stones reading 'RIC AVLSTV', 'ALSTUN HATH INHERITED HERE IB 18 YER', and a sacred monogram between two crosses. The front of the cross-wing displays a 7-light mullioned window, with outer chamfer and inner hollow chamfer, and a hood on each floor. A similar 2-light window serves the attic, with a sacred monogram and a roundel above, also under a hood. A continuous inscription, protected by a drip course, runs above the ground floor window, and continues onto the return wall, reading "BRVTVS ERECTVS LON CESAR CONQVERT AN SAXONII CONQVERT ANGLIA DINV ANTE CHRIST 1108 GLIA ANTE CHRIST 58 ANNO DON 447 EPISCOPAT IB DANII CONQVERT ANGLIA IN CO AGER FLODDAN AN 1513 ANGLIA ANNO DOI 1018 M. SIVE. SHIRI ANGL RECEP. FIDM AD 179" and "ANNO DOMI 1591 ELIS REGI ROBART ALSTVN 25 A CREACIONE MVNDI REGNO ANNI ETATIS NOSTRE RIC ALSTVN IVNIOR 5 TO ANGLIE 524 DEVM 5553 A CONQVES TIME REGEM HONOR." A blocked one-light chamfered window, bearing "Richarde Alstun 53" on the lintel, is located to the left of the front wall, with a chamfered door surround featuring a triangular head, hood, and lintel inscribed: 'RESPICE FINEM ET NVNQV AM PECCABIS PROXIMUM AMA', to the right. An additional 3-light window and a piece of stone gutter with a broken gargoyle are present on the first floor. The left-hand return wall of the cross-wing has a projecting stack, with a blocked one-light chamfered window and a 2-light window similar to those on the front, situated to its right. An eaves-level gargoyle projects from the chimney, complemented by a second in the front angle with the main wall.

The rear wall incorporates sashed windows with plain reveals. Internally, the front door opens in line with a shouldered, segmental-headed fireplace, with an 18th-century, moulded, shouldered fireplace with a cornice mantel to the left. A rear door into the cross wing is inscribed with "Fear God and love the right." The front room of the cross-wing features a blocked, chamfered fireplace and a decorated panel. The front first-floor room of the cross-wing holds fragments of clustered columns in plaster, a chamfered fireplace and an inscribed stone.
