Description

A pair of townhouses, dating from approximately 1846, and now used as offices. The buildings are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. They are set back from Ribblesdale Place and curve at the junction with Avenham Lane, with a further addition connecting to Regent Street on the right-hand side. The plan is double-depth, originally built as a pair of single-fronted houses with adjoining halls and coupled extensions to the rear.

There are two storeys over cellars, with two bays arranged symmetrically. The front features an ashlar plinth, a moulded band at the first floor level, a plain frieze, and a moulded cornice. The central doorways are raised two steps with nosings and are framed by doorcases composed of three engaged Ionic columns with a plain frieze and moulded cornice, including a blocking course. Each doorway has impost mouldings, a moulded lintel, an elliptical fanlight, and a panelled door. Each house has a later, two-storey canted bay window with hornless four-pane sashed glazing on both floors. A stone plaque with concave corners is set between the bays at the first floor level, inscribed “RIBBLESDALE PLACE” with "35 / 36" below. The roof is hipped at the right-hand end and coped at the left gable, with a cut-down chimney. Railing plinths with replacement railings enclose the paved front areas, attached to the front corners and the centre of the steps.

The return wall of No.36, facing Regent Street, has a lower, two-storey, single-bay extension to the rear. The first-floor band is ramped down to this extension, and there is one twelve-pane sash window on each floor of each section. The band continues to ramp down to the coping of the back-yard wall, which includes a doorway providing access to the yards of both properties. The interior was not inspected.
