Description

This is a terrace of five small town houses located at 38-44 St Austin’s Place, alongside number 36 St Austin’s Road. Built around 1840-45, the houses are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof. Each house has a double-depth plan, a single-fronted facade, and coupled extensions to the rear. The building has two storeys over cellars, presenting a nine-window front. Architectural details include a stone plinth, band, a plain frieze and a moulded gutter cornice. Doorways are positioned on the right-hand side, each with a moulded architrave and cornice resting on consoles. The windows have raised sills, with the ground-floor windows featuring flat-arched heads, and all with altered glazing. Number 36 St Austin's Road has a double-fronted facade with blind windows to the left and above the door, and these windows are rendered. The roof is hipped at the right-hand end, with ridge chimneys (which are mostly slightly cut down). The rear of the property and the interiors have not been inspected. The terrace forms a group with numbers 26-30, numbers 30-34 St Austin's Road and the Church of St Augustine and its presbytery opposite.
