Description

Nos. 47 and 48 Chaddock Street are a pair of small town houses built around 1830, with some alterations. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, although No. 47 has been remodelled with sandstone dressings and features a slate roof. The buildings are square blocks, with No. 47 forming the southern half, being double-depth and single-fronted to the street, while No. 48, the northern half, is single-depth with a double-fronted facade facing north.

Both houses are two storeys high and have cellars, with three first-floor windows on each facade. They feature a plain frieze and a moulded gutter cornice that runs around the buildings. The doorways are positioned to the left at No. 47 and centrally at No. 48, with three and two steps leading up to them respectively; No. 47 has nosings. The doorways are framed by round-headed architraves with set-in Tuscan quarter-columns, plain lintels, and semicircular fanlights with hollow-moulded surrounds. Each facade has two ground floor windows and three above, all with raised sills and wedge lintels, although the glazing has been altered. The Chaddock Street facade includes two cellar windows with wedge lintels. The roof is hipped over the right-hand corner, featuring one chimney on the ridge and another on the right-hand slope. The left return wall, facing Bairstow Street, is gabled and has two windows on each floor, with the second window on the first floor being blind. There are extensions at the rear. The interiors have not been inspected. This pair of houses is part of an almost complete set of late Georgian lower-middle class houses in the street.
