Description

A pair of small town houses, built around 1830 and altered subsequently, are located on Latham Street in Preston. Constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, with sandstone dressings and a slate roof, the houses have a double-depth plan, with each house single-fronted and a rear extension. They are two storeys high over cellars, featuring a symmetrical facade with 2+2 windows, a plain frieze and a moulded gutter cornice. The doorways, set two steps up, form a triplet with a through-lobby doorway between them. Each doorway has an elliptical head with a gauged brick surround, quarter columns and a fanlight with radiating leaded tracery. No. 17 has a panelled door with glazed top panels, while No. 18 has an altered door. A lobby doorway has a plain stone surround. No. 17 has sash windows without glazing bars. No. 18's windows have been altered and include early 20th-century stained glass. All windows have raised sills and wedge lintels, and the cellar windows also have wedge lintels and protective gratings. Gable chimneys are present. The rear and interior were not inspected.
