Description

The Fernyhalgh War Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1921, with additions for the Second World War. It is made of granite carved stones and has a concrete base inset with ceramic tiles.

The memorial stands in a small roadside garden located in the southern boundary of the churchyard of the Roman Catholic church of St Mary. It features a Greek cross with a long shaft, mounted on a pyramidal plinth and square foot, all resting on a two-stepped base. Each arm of the cross is adorned with a cluster of oak leaves carved in relief, while the center displays the letters IHS in decorative script. A roll-moulding border encircles both the cross and the central inscription. The tapering rectangular shaft also has a similar border that divides it horizontally. The upper part of the shaft features crossed palm leaves in relief, while the lower part has an inscription in incised letters filled in black, which reads: IN/ THE NAME OF/ THE GOD OF/ VICTORIES/ PRAY/ FOR THE/ REPOSE OF/ THE SOULS OF/ FIVE/ FERNYHALGH/ SOLDIERS/ WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES FOR/ KING/ AND COUNTRY/ DURING/ THE GREAT WAR/ OF/ 1914-1918,/ R.I.P. The sides and back of the cross and shaft are plain.

The plinth is roughly dressed with a central smooth ground on the front and sides, and it is inscribed on the front in a similar manner: ETERNAL REST GIVE TO THEM/ O LORD/ (Names). The names are listed by rank and date of death, including forenames. The left face is inscribed with the years 1939-1945 and the names of those who served.

The square foot is carved like the plinth and bears the inscription: THIS MONUMENT HAS BEEN ERECTED/ BY THE PEOPLE OF FERNYHALGH,/ IN MEMORY OF THEIR FALLEN HEROES. Below this is a two-stepped rectangular concrete base, featuring black-and-white tiles set into its upper face in a border and cross design.
