Description
Nos. 19 and 20 Latham Street are a pair of small town houses built around 1830, with some alterations. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring sandstone dressings and a slate roof. Each house has a double-depth plan and is single-fronted, with coupled back extensions. The buildings rise two storeys over cellars and have a symmetrical facade with two windows on each side. The plain frieze and moulded gutter cornice add to their architectural detail.
The doorways, each accessed by one altered step, form a triplet with a round-headed through-lobby doorway situated between them. This doorway is designed as a single composition with engaged Ionic columns, a continuous frieze, and cornice. The doors are panelled with glazed top panels and feature elliptical-arched fanlights with gauged brick voussoirs, which are now painted white. All windows have raised sills and wedge lintels, with altered glazing; the windows at No. 19 include early 20th-century stained glass. The cellar windows also have wedge lintels and protective gratings, while gable chimneys are present on the roof.
At the rear of No. 19, original 16-pane sashed windows can be found on the ground floor of both the main range and the extension, with 12-pane sashes above. The interior has been altered, but the two-room cellar retains large fireplaces in both rooms and a washing boiler in the rear room.
