Description

Nos. 40 and 41 Frenchwood Street are a pair of small town houses built around 1850, with some alterations. They are constructed of red brick in Flemish bond with tuck-pointing and feature sandstone dressings. The roof of No. 40 is slate, while No. 41 has concrete tiles. Each house has a double-depth plan, is single-fronted, and has back extensions. They are two storeys tall with cellars, each having two bays on the front. The houses have a plinth, a first-floor sill-band, a plain frieze, and a moulded gutter cornice. The doorways, which are accessed by three and one steps respectively, have moulded architraves with dentilled cornices on consoles, and the doors have been altered but include overlights. Each house has one window on the ground floor and two on the first floor, all with raised sills and wedge lintels, though the glazing has been altered. The roof is hipped at the left corner, and there is a large lateral multiple-flue chimney stack at the junction of the two houses. At the rear, there are individual extensions with gable chimneys. The interior has not been inspected, but it is believed to have had keeping-cellars under the front rooms and wash-houses in the back extensions. This pair is part of a formerly complete set of late Georgian lower-middle-class town houses on this street.
