Description
The former corn and saw mill with smithy at Moss House is a steam-powered facility built in 1845 by W.A.F. Saunders of Wennington Hall. It is part of a model farm and constructed from local coursed freestone with a blue Ulverston slate roof. The building is a symmetrical two-storey range with a layout of 2:4:2, featuring a central gable with window bays and slightly recessed lean-to extensions on either side.
Stone end stacks are present, and bays 2 and 7 have large elliptically headed keyed wagon entrances leading into the saw mill/joiners' shop and straw barn, respectively, with openings above. There are windows and a taking-in doorway in bays 1 and 8. The central block includes the corn mill on the left and a threshing/winnowing room on the right, each with separate doorways. The upper floors have openings, some fitted with sashes that have small panes. Above the datestone, which is eroded, there is a gable opening.
The lean-to on the left housed the smithy, with a window above the doorway, while the lean-to on the right contained a cart shed, now with an enlarged entry. All openings are under stone lintels with stone sills. At the rear, there is a stack and engine house. This range serves as the mechanised and food-processing unit of the farm and is completely separated from the livestock shelters to the south, with which it groups.
