Description
Borwick Hall Stables, believed to have been used for pack horses and as sleeping accommodation, likely dates from the mid-17th century. The building is constructed of rubble with a stone slate and slate roof and has two storeys. The north-west wall, which faces the road, features six bays. The ground-floor windows are single-light and plain chamfered, while the first-floor windows are two-light, chamfered, and include mullions. Bay 5 has a wide door opening with plain reveals and a timber lintel. Between bays 3 and 4, there is a re-set stone on the first floor inscribed 'AD 1590 RB AB', likely a keystone from a joggled fireplace arch.
The south-east wall has chamfered door surrounds with triangular heads in every bay except bay 3. The door in bay 1 is partly blocked, while bay 3 has a modern doorway with plain reveals. A similar doorway has been added to the right of the original one in bay 1. There are ten one-light chamfered windows on the ground floor. On the first floor, bays 1-3 have two-light chamfered mullioned windows with hood moulds, and bays 4-6 have three-light windows of a similar style. The left-hand return wall features a two-light chamfered mullioned window with a hood on the ground floor and a chamfered door surround with a triangular head on the first floor, accessible by external concrete steps.
Inside, the first floor is undivided and showcases a variety of roof trusses that appear to be original. Some trusses have collars only, while others include tie beams and queen struts, with some of the latter once being closed above the tie.
