Description
The monument to Adam Westwell, who died in 1859, is located approximately 40 metres west of the Church of St. James in Accrington. Erected in 1860, this stone structure features a pedestal with a square section designed to resemble the top stage of a Gothic church tower. It includes a square base, a moulded plinth, diagonal buttresses, a chamfered cornice, and a parapet that is pierced by quatrefoils, with crocketed pinnacles at each corner. Each side of the pedestal has a panel set within a multifoil arch, decorated with carvings that include musical instruments. The inscription on the west side notes that the monument was erected by members and friends of the Accrington Brass Band in memory of Adam Westwell, "WHO FOR MANY YEARS WAS AN ACCOMPLISHED OPHICLEIDE PLAYER IN THE ABOVE BAND MDCCCLX". The ophicleide is a keyed brass wind instrument.
