Description

The White House is a farmhouse dating to 1701, as indicated by an inscription on the porch doorway lintel. It has been altered and extended, and was originally two dwellings, now combined into one. The main part of the house is constructed of white-painted handmade brick in a random bond, with the top nine courses being 19th-century brick. It has a slate roof. The building follows a baffle-entry plan with a four-bay layout, the fourth bay being a later addition. Originally two storeys, it likely had 1½ storeys previously. A gabled porch, located at the junction of the first and second bays, has a doorway with a splayed brick head on its left side. All windows are modern casements with diamond-leaded glazing. A blocked segmental-headed stairlight is found near the junction of the second and third bays.

The rear elevation features a buttress in the centre and remains of four original windows, notably hoodmoulds to a two-light fire window and a housepart window, and windows in the third bay of three or four and three lights respectively. Chimneys are situated on the ridge at the junction of the first and second bays and towards the right gable.

Inside, a large inglenook fireplace with a substantial bressumer and heck wall is present. Two chamfered beams with cyma stops are also visible, and a partition wall has been removed. The former third bay retains two chamfered beams with run-out stops. The porch’s original front door has a wooden lintel with the incised lettering "1701 K : AK." It is reported that the interior once contained a painted fresco depicting the coat of arms of Clifton R E, though its current location is unknown, potentially hidden under plaster.
