Description
5 Regent Avenue is a former pair of cottages that have been converted into a single dwelling. The building dates from the late 18th century, with an interior date of 1767 mentioned, and underwent alterations and extensions in the 19th century. It is primarily constructed of hand-made brick, raised by six courses of common brick, and features a roof mostly covered with corrugated asbestos sheet, which replaced the original thatch, along with some slate on the addition at the west end.
The structure has a linear single-depth four-bay plan, with an additional bay at the west end and two lean-to extensions at the rear. Originally one-and-a-half storeys, it has been raised to two low storeys, with four windows that are irregularly spaced on the first floor.
The former eaves line is highlighted by a saw-tooth brick band with a stone slate coping that slightly overhangs the upper windows. The openings are unevenly arranged, with a doorway at the left end, two two-light windows at ground floor, and two smaller windows above. There is also a blocked doorway, another doorway, a larger two-light window to the right, and a small window above and between them. Further to the right is a very small square window at mid-level, likely for the staircase, and at the right end, there is an altered window at ground floor and a two-light window directly above. Most of the windows appear to be sliding sashes, with various configurations of panes.
The addition at the left end, likely a dairy or similar service room, features a gable wall partly built of cobblestones. The building has a double chimney stack on the center of the ridge and single chimneys at both original gables. This structure is a rare example of pre-industrial domestic architecture.
