Description

No. 8 on Grange Lane is a cruck-framed cottage that was formerly two cottages and may have originally been one farmhouse. It is currently undergoing renovation and conversion into a single dwelling. The exterior features white-painted render on brick, with a roof that is partly covered in corrugated sheet and partly unfinished, although thatch is intended. The building has a linear four-bay plan, with a curved rear left corner. It stands one and a half storeys tall and has buttresses at the corners and at the central junction.

The left section of the cottage has a central doorway and two two-light casement windows with glazing bars. The right section is set back and has an offset doorway to the right, along with three similar casement windows, one of which is in a projecting bay with the roof extending over it. The left gable features a small window near the apex, and the wall curves around to the rear, likely following the line of an old path.

Inside, there are three full cruck trusses, each different from one another. The first truss has a yoke but is missing the lower part of the rear blade. The second truss includes a tie-beam, collar, yoke, dorsals, and housings for wattle studs in the upper panels, which are now out of place and will be replaced. The third truss has a low tie-beam, a vacant collar housing, and a yoke. Large squared purlins with mortices are present, likely re-used wallplates. The third bay has been divided by a lateral partition in a previous alteration and features a moulded beam with a cyma stop. The fourth bay has been axially partitioned to create a parlour and service room.
