Description
The Rough is an early 19th-century house located on Heapey Road in Chorley. It is built of rendered stone and features a hipped slate roof with projecting eaves and two chimneys along the central axis. The house has a double pile, three-bay plan with a rear service wing on the left side. It stands two storeys tall, including a cellar, and is designed in a late Georgian style. The façade is symmetrical, featuring a round-headed doorway with a fluted architrave that includes moulded imposts and a scrolled keystone. The recessed doorcase is composed of slim wooden columns and an entablature, topped with a fanlight that has elegantly curved glazing bars. There are five windows on the front and six on the right side, all of which are sashed with moulded surrounds; the three ground floor windows on the right are particularly tall. The rear wall includes a stairlight with glazing bars, while other openings are less noteworthy. Inside, the entrance hall is flagged and features another fanlight. The contemporary staircase has a curtail, and the drawing room showcases an anthemion and palmette plaster frieze, along with a recess decorated with vine leaves.
