Description
This is a First World War memorial erected in 1917. It stands in the churchyard, situated within a gap in the boundary hedge and facing west towards the road. The memorial is constructed from white Cornish granite on a plinth, shaft, and wheelhead cross, with a bronze replica of the Victoria Cross and lead lettering. The overall height is approximately 2 metres, and the structure is bedded on concrete imitating granite.
The memorial features a base step surmounted by a battered plinth, rock-faced on the front, and a tapering shaft with bands of interlace decoration at its head and foot, as well as rounded borders to each edge. The wheelhead cross has tapered arms decorated with interlace and a central boss. A bronze replica of the Victoria Cross is affixed to the top of the shaft. Below the cross is an inscription in lead lettering commemorating Private James Miller, of the King's Own (Royal Lancaster) Regiment, who died from wounds on 30 July 1916, aged 26 years, and is interred in Récourt, France.
The front of the plinth bears a raised inscription detailing Private Miller's heroic actions in delivering a message under heavy fire and sustaining fatal injuries. Another inscription on the base step quotes "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends,” and a further inscription states the memorial was erected by public subscription. The rear faces of the cross and shaft mirror the decoration on their front faces.
A section of the surrounding sandstone churchyard boundary wall, approximately 2 metres long, ramps down on either side and is lowered to a height of about half a metre to better display the memorial. This section of wall is topped with a contemporary wrought-iron railing featuring square baluster posts and rails with barley-twist center sections, with finials believed to have been added in 1988.
