Description
Nos. 102 and 104 Towngate is a farmhouse that has been converted into two dwellings. It is dated 1659 on the porch and has been altered and extended over time. The building is made of handmade brick with stone quoins and features a chamfered stone plinth and a slate roof. It has a three-bay baffle-entry plan with a projecting porch and an added wing on the left end, along with modern additions to the rear.
The structure stands two storeys high, with the walls raised by approximately 15 courses. The two-storey gabled porch aligns with the chimney behind the ridge at the junction of the second and third bays. This porch has quoins that reach two-thirds of its height, an open outer doorway with a large sandstone lintel that bears worn lettering, including the restored date of 1659. There is a brick label above the lintel, a peephole on the left side, and a blocked 2-light window on the right side at the first floor. Inside the porch, there are wooden side benches and an inner door with a stop-moulded wooden surround.
To the left of the porch, there are two sashed windows on each floor, with the ground floor windows featuring brick labels and interrupted coursing beside them that suggests former brick mullion windows. On the right side, there is one 4-pane sash window on each floor. The left end has a slightly projecting gabled addition, which overlaps the original corner's quoins. This addition has a lower stone plinth, pebble-dashed walls, a modern porch and windows, and a projecting side wall chimney stack. The interior has not been inspected, but it is likely to contain features of interest, such as shaped beams.
