Description

Rivington Pike Tower is a structure built in 1733 by John Andrews of Little Lever, who was the owner of the Manor of Rivington. It is believed to be located on the site of an earlier beacon. The tower is constructed of gritstone and measures approximately 5 metres square and 7 metres high. It features a high chamfered plinth, a string course, and an oversailing parapet that is crowned with pointed corners and intermediate steps. Each side of the tower has one blocked rectangular opening, including a doorway on the south side that has an ornamental pointed "hoodmould" above it, which breaks the string course. Originally built as a hunting lodge, the tower contained a fireplace and previously had a chimney, as well as a small cellar.
