Description
Foldys Cross is a commemorative cross located approximately 300 meters south-west of Towneley Hall in Burnley. It also served as a market cross and commemorates John Foldys. The cross is dated 1520 on its plinth. Originally erected in St Peter's churchyard, it was damaged in 1789 and subsequently removed to Towneley Hall, where it was re-erected with a new shaft. The cross underwent restoration between 1908 and 1911 and is now mounted on a high 20th-century base consisting of seven steps.
The cross is made of sandstone and features an octagonal shape. It has a moulded plinth with sunk panels that contain raised lettering in Gothic script. The shaft is a restored octagonal form, topped with an original moulded cap that has carved emblems and fleurons on the collar. The cross itself is ornately carved, displaying a primitive crucifix on one side and the letters "IHS" on the other. The inscription on the plinth reads: "Orate pro anima Johannis Foldys, capellani qui istam crucem fieri fecit Anno Domini MCCCCCXX", which translates to "Pray for the soul of John Foldys, chaplain who caused this cross to be made in the year of Our Lord 1520."
